The Power of the Human Figure

  • How Judith works with Figures
  • From Landscapes into Figures
  • Regarding her new"From Dust to Dust" series, Judith says...
  • How Judith Works with Figures...

    carressing her subject's cares

How does Judith see people? Plainly in their own world... strong, vulnerable, innocent, manipulative, however, they have made their world.

    • Plein Air, observing life, responding to the emotional tenor of her very human subjects
    • from imagination, forcasting their tradjectory,
    • and from biographical photographs
    • in a sense carressing her subject's cares with her brush on canvas or paper.
    • completing the work with kinestictic psychological response

    From Landscapes... into Figures

In the past, my subject has been primarily landscape, recently there’s a growing interest in the emotive elements of the figure. I do not place my people in the sublime landscape unless they know they belong there. I want their persona to come through. If they see their world broken and filled with distress they will wear that impression in the lines on their face or paler of their skin.

Regarding her new "From Dust to Dust" series, Judith says,...

"As I have explored the effects of light burning away the mists, I have considered what it is in the imagery that has fascinated me.

  • Why was I so drawn to the light and the void of darkness burnt away by the light?
  • At the same time I began drawing the people around me. I especially enjoyed doing line drawings of my mother, catching her sighs, her groans and joys in the lines on her face and in her hands and arms. I felt the imagery of real people and the landscapes needed to be brought together as they are in life. I began seeing the human bodies rising out of the earth as new landscapes approached by light, yet oblivious to the light. I have more to consider and discover in this new direction.
