In the Trenches

A soldier lies low among roots, rocks, and tangled woodland growth. Rich greens and broken light surround his figure in this acrylic painting, inviting reflection on vulnerability within the landscape of war.

In the painting In the Trenches, a helmeted soldier stretches close to the ground beneath a dense canopy of branches. Roots, stones, and leafy growth surround him, while slender tree trunks divide the space between his body and the viewer.

The woodland is alive with color and light. Against that abundance, the soldier’s low posture suggests the effort of remaining sheltered or unseen. His position leaves the moment unresolved: is he waiting, resting, or seeking protection?

The painting draws the viewer into that uncertainty. Within Weight of War, it turns attention toward the individual body within a military setting—the person who must endure each moment close to the earth.
