In Soldier Alone at Sunset, a seated soldier leans forward, his head lowered and his hands gathered between his knees. His boots rest among shoreline grasses, with belongings beside him. The bowed posture draws us close while leaving his thoughts unspoken.
Beyond him, sunlight opens between distant trees and spreads across the water. Blues and violet shadows surround the bright reflection, while touches of gold trace the soldier’s clothing and the grasses.
The tall composition connects this intimate foreground with the expansive light beyond it. Within Weight of War, the painting offers a moment of stillness in which weariness and beauty coexist. The sunset leaves room for hope without resolving the soldier’s solitude.
